WABC
"THE LAST FAREWELL"
AND
"THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES"
SPECIAL NOTES: The information and the goodbye at the bottom of
the list is taken from Metropolitan Report, Volume #288H. This is
indeed WABC's last music survey.
The Top 10 does not have a #1 (for the 10th week in WABC's Top 40
history, all occurring in 1982) or #8. More than likely, and
comparing WABC's chart to crosstown Top 40 WYNY, those two
positions would be "I Love Rock 'n Roll" by Joan Jett & the
Blackhearts (on the Boardwalk label) and "We Got the Beat" by the
Go-Go's (on I.R.S.), or possibly "867-5309/Jenny" by Tommy Tutone
(Columbia). These songs were never played on WABC, which had
softened its format to a more Adult Contemporary sound by early
1982.
On Monday, 10 May 1982, at 12:00 (noon), WABC ended its twenty-two
year run as a Top 40 station, adopting a talk format.
