PRODUCER'S NOTE

When I proposed a seven-CD set that would include 160 songs and dozens of "sound bites" of the 1970s, some thought -- or perhaps it confirmed for them -- that I was insane. But fortunately, even our most rational Rhinos had that uniquely wonderful attitude: "It's so crazy, it just might work!"

Someone once said that our musical preferences are formed by what we listen to between the ages of 10 to 22. Because I was born in 1960, my formative years encompass the whole decade of the '70s. I can't apologize for it -- I can only accept it and foist it lovingly on you. The first single I bought with my own money (I was 9 going on 10) was "Ride Captain Ride" by Blues Image (included herein), and I still think it's a pretty good record.

Intellectually, I know the '60s was a vastly superior cultural decade, but for me they'll never be as fun. The '60s are important historically. The 70's are important for their escapist value. Besides, the '70s is the only decade that when we look at old pictures causes people from all generations to laugh at what we wore, and that kind of says it all.

So, run your fingers through the shag carpet, listen to Patty Hearst as "Tanya," and blast "Get Down Tonight" by K.C. & The Sunshine Band. Though certainly not something to brag about -- they should at least bring a smile to your face.
